Horseshoe Ontario DH Cup #2

After almost two months of hard work, lead by Shane Joachim, we were gratefully faced with a totally brand new Horseshoe course. The dreadfully long pedal section was taken out and instead changed into a fun warm up before racing. On the course you could pretty much find anything and everything. Thus possessed a challenge to not some, but all racers and maybe even spectators.

Rider turn out for the weekend was more than decent considering many riders and teams traveled to the US open at Diablo Freeride Park.The line ups were still long, but things still going fast. Practice was probably
tough for all.

Extreme heat and blue skies all week/weekend made the track essentially like riding on a beach; this meant that whoever could put down a clean and consistent run would more than likely walk away with top spot.

At the end of Saturday many riders were still unsure about how to attack this course. Would they go full out and hope that the corners held up? Or would they play it conservative and try to put together a consistent and clean run?

I asked my teammate and good riding buddy Sam Caldwell how he approached the track. "Very conservative compared to my normal riding style," was his response. Sam placed second place in Senior Sport category, congrats dude!

Camp Of Champions Intern Contest

Dagmar Sesh

Another awesome session went down at the Dagmar trails.Sunshine all day was great. Pretty technical track. Gotta be probably the hardest toonie race track that's taken place. Some steep off camber, crazy rock garden, and gnarly roots.

The notorious Dagmar rock garden posed some tricky runs for some people. I think I watched too many people go down in that section. Healing vibes go out to Hermo and Tatem for unfortunate injuries. Nonetheless it proved to be great practise for some, including myself, for whats to come in the future Ocup races.

Kelso Ontario DH Cup #1

Was soo stoked for the first race of the season, but it now feels like it was centuries ago because I am now even more stoked for the second race! Haha.

Thanks to all the folks that were able to make it the build and set all of us with sweet new,not brand new, course. Saturday's practice turned out to be interesting. Prior to the race we had been having rainless riding weather, however come race weekend, showers were predicted. Pretty much everyone got a run or two of practice on the bone dry course. Unfortunately, but fortunately, at 11 o'clock we got blasted with strong pouring rain for 30 minutes, with some light rain for a bit after. I had actually predicted it exactly, seriously! With the lifts closed for lunch, we went up for an inspection. It was looking pretty slick. Hermo did some but tobagons down the course. At first it was looking like the water just seaped into the ground until everyone started riding it... and it turned out to be even more awesome!!!! Check out a helmet cam of the track:

Sunday was looking like we were gonna get a whole day of showers, but it only drizzled in the morning for a bit and became sunny and hot eventually. The morning was started off with a strange closure of the track. Someone had snapped a tree causing danger for riders which had to be chainsawed off. After delay, practice went on.

A new line got revealed or uncovered by
the rock drop. Thus separating the men from the babies.( I was part of the babies...) Reason I say it like that is because at the end of the day most of the top times were on the rock drop.

Racing mode became apparent in most during lunch. Everyone was getting nervously stoked for some braapage. And bam bam bam racing began with sunshine out!

After my run, I was walking up to watch some pinning. As I was walking past the last rock garden section I hear a thunderous noise and the ground shook a little. It sound as if someone drove their pick-up truck through a bunch of trees. It happened to be another tree delay... However this time it was a little worse. It was pretty big. Like 14 or 16inch? Thankfully the rider who was racing at that moment was not underneath it when it fell. The chainsaw came back up and the tree was quickly gone allowing the racing to continue.

Sweet session went down at Jeremy's trails. The weather has been so great, the trails were even dusty! Before that ride I can't say I have ever went that fast inside a forest. The race track was just soo pinned. Near the end their was a section were you'd come in pinned after corner, hit a jump, let go of your brakes, and just hold through like 50ft of naturaul woops. So awesome!!

After the racing everyone headed to a trail called "Milwaukee" ( sorry if I spelled it wrong haha) for some 'after-seshness'. The trail should have been called awesomdary for how awesomedary it was! It went like jump, jump, berm, jump, berm, berm, jump, berm, berm, berm, jump, big friggen roller, jump, wallride, wallrdie. Everyone was either getting air or getting low on the berms.

You've got 'Good Friday' and 'Easter Monday' combined with no snow and t-shirt conditions, who wouldn't want to ride? Hermo and I knew from last season that we wanted to host a little spring session at our trails. Unfortunately all our stuff got torn down last fall by the conservation authorities. Fortunately however, we have established an area that we all call 'Mexico' were the authorities won't be touching us, hopefully. With the snow gone so fast this year it allowed myself to get out to the trail we had built last fall and mint it up. But thanks to all the folks that helped out Friday to get some gnarcore features added!

Saturday was looking mint. Gangster people showed up and the BRAAAPIN' began.

It's not an awesome trail without an awesome roll in! Built by the best.

Since last summer many people like myself have been anticipating one of the largest additions to the Ontario cycling community: the "GTA bike park" which was later given the name "Joyride 150". Since opening it's doors in December of 2009, it has been given much attention by cyclists and non-cyclists alike.
From opening day I have started to get to know the guys at Joyride, and they are an amazing group of riders dedicated to helping the sport progress! There is definitely something for everyone there, from jumps and street/vert park, all the way to a cross-country (XC) loop and spinning studio (coming soon).

Matthew Macduff - Interview

It's not everyday on the East coast of Canada that you can say your from a town of which a local pro was raised. However Ontario has been producing many sick riders lately like Logan Peat, Andrew Bigelow, Kent Woods etc. However in the streets of my little suburban town, Matthew Macduff was raised. This man has a great attitude and lots of energy. He first started off by inspiring everyone in my town, including myself, and is now very well known in our province. Thankfully because of our new local bike park, Joyride 150, I was able to see him again for possibly what may be the last time before he's busy riding awesome spots in different towns and inspiring other kids.

Who are you?
I am a no good, biking riding, long haired, girlfriend loven, video game playing, movie watching, joken, little sister bugging, good timing, dirty rotten scoundrel!

Is bicycle riding fun?
Is powning noobs on COD6 fun? YES, man biking for me is more than fun, there is no way you can do it and not have fun. Man just dropping in a quarter pipe is fun, and when you got a bunch of quarter pipes to drop in on and a shit load of funny friends to do it with, you’re on a whole other level!

What is your riding style?
My ridding style... Mmm...I would say I have a street BMX style, but on a MTB, I think because I ride with a lot of bmxers, and watch a lot of their videos, it rubs off so to speak.

Before biking you had a skate boarding phase, what made you start biking?
Yah I used to skate, I skated for like 3 years before I started riding. I remember when I was younger I went out west with my family, and I had an uncle who lived there, he had a 2004 Kona Stuff. He got me on that thing and I had 40 times more fun doing endows in the driveway than kick flips, so when I got home I saved up my money and bought a 2005 Kona Stuff with the Hayes 9 brakes, and things went from there.

Most vivid childhood memory of you doing something you knew was wrong?
Throwing rocks at my grandparent's neighbor's shed windows, that’s all I can think of, I don't really have any vivid childhood memories to begin with, it’s all a blur of goodness!

You are now switching to 26’s, but why did you choose to ride 24’s for the longest time?
I don't really know, to tell you the truth, I have just always been ridding them and never thought anything of it, but know that I think about it...I remember a profit sent from the MTB gods who came to me 4 years ago when I was a young man and said “son...that MTB is way too big for you, and you lack the strength to show it who is boss, change to 24s and work hard, and when you are ready for the 26s I will come to you”. I just got a call from him, and we met at Starbucks for a moko rideo low cafe grande' and he told me that it is time to complete my destiny and shred 26s!

A few years ago you were hit by a car while riding, how did that change your riding?
When I got hit by that drunk driver, it changed not only my riding but my life, it made me realize that life is too short and we must live each day to the fullest, no matter what other people think. After that accident I became a new person, a new rider. I started to live how I wanted to live, dress how I wanted to dress, ride how I wanted to ride. I no longer rode because I wanted to be cool or really good or to pass the time, I ride because it's so much fun, and the day I ride and it's not fun is the day I stop, and with out my accident I never would have been able to come to that conclusion. It’s all about the fun.

Dirt/street/park?
Street! There is nothing better than ridding a cool, new, FREE street spot.

Your dream dirt/street/park spot?
I could never be able to right it down, but it would be full of unique objects, extremely tight and hard to ride.

In grade 8 you got a MVP in basketball, what happened with that?
Nothing happened with that haha, I don't understand why I got that till this day. I am probably the worst basket ball player on this planet!

Big flips or big whips?
BIG WHIPS, Tail whips are like 40 million times harder than back flips, it took me 3 tries to learn how to back flip, it took me 2 YEARS to dial in my tail whips and I still miss them sometimes! I have never understood why people are so into back flips, like a 360 is harder than a back flip. Now if were talking about front flips here, that’s a hole other story, front flips are the shit! If you can front flip you are a real man haha because they are SO hard, and SO sweet. But when it comes down to it whips crush flips, unless it’s a front flip.

Some people in your video comments dislike that you do a lot of barspins, why do you really like doing them?
Well if anyone can bar spin they already know why, they are hands down the most fun trick! The only thing more fun is 2 bar spins hahaha, and that’s why I do them, because they’re fun. I think people who put those comments on the videos can't bar spin because if they could then they would know how much fun they are and be like 'sick!' hahaha. I only do tricks that I find fun to do, but on the contrary I fully understand those people who don't like all my bar spins because I do, do a lot of them, lol, and I’m trying to cut down but they’re just soooo good. They’re like the sweetest candy and I’m a rich fat kid who wants to eat them all...and I want to apologize to all of the skinny poor kids who miss out lol. But I think when it comes down to it. I think they secretly like my bar spins or they wouldn't watch my videos.

If you could do a trick that hasn’t been done yet what would it be?
I think I would probably like to do a double truck off a really big drop, even though it’s been done on a BMX. Or a double back flip...

How do you practice/ get better?
Mmmm...I find the best way to get better is just forget about the getting better part, and do more of the practice part hahaha. I find that the only way to improve is to DO WORK! Which means practice, practice, practice, and discover the secret formula which the gods of MTB have interested me with to share with all of you is...? NBD+DW/F+F+T= BETTERNESS!

What makes you want to go bigger and do bigger tricks?
That’s a good question...I’m not to sure what it is, I think it’s that feeling you get once you have done something new, or big. The feeling that puts you on the top of the world, the high that is bike riding I guess.

Your biggest accomplishment?
Becoming a man...

How was the '09 season?
My '09 season was awesome! This was my first year I got to travel and be a part of the MTB seen. I got my first sponsor; DOBERMANN BIKES, and met a whole bunch of awesome people, who I am so happy to have met. I have doubled in skill and my fun levels have hit new heights too! I can't wait to see what 2010 has in store.

Best memory/moment of 09?
Going to my high school graduation in a bright orange tux.

Your biggest inspiration?
I would have to say Garrett Reynolds, Mich Plonka, and Darren Berrecloth.

What movie and TV show do you think you would fit in best if you got to live in it?
Movie: AvaTar, not as a human.
TV Show: Jersey shore

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would have the power to read/control minds. That would be crazy think about how much fun you could have! No one could kick you out of any street spot, that’s what I’m talking about! Or flight that would just be sweetly awesome!

Naked mole rat or fighting chicken?
Pregnant ostrich?

What is your current bike set-up?
I have a SICK BIKE right now man. I got a Doberman Pinscher 21.5 TT, Atom Lab; Pimplight wheels, stem, bars, pedals, hubs, Profile cranks, and an old 2004 Sherman Gold Label!

What is your dream car?
I would love to have an old 1937 ford pick up; completely redone and turned into a rat rod...that’s what I am talking about! Oh yah with a bike rack too.

Excited for 2010?
OH YA! All I can say is that my life is getting expansionally sweeter every year. So that means that next year (if my math is correct) is going to be way sicker than this last year, so I’m pumped! I have got some great friends, girl friend, and family and I can't wait to spend 2010 with them all, it's going to be sweet!

Any big plans/goals?
Yah I’m going to Europe with Mich P, and Jeremy Mandoome in the spring, can't wait!

Why do you like mustaches so much?
A thick mustache is a sign of a real man. You never mess with a guy with a dam thick mustache, because he will probably go all Chuck Norris on your behind. Also have you ever seen the movie Hot Rod...my favorite movie and probably the best movie ever made, I quote...“Frank, all great men have mustaches” which is so true, for example... MLK Jr. had a mustache, Mohandas GANDHI had a mustache, Michael Jordan had a mustache, and this last great man had possibly the HUGEST MUSTACHE ever seen on this planet...Count Otto von Bismarck, who Unified Germany, defeated the Austrian Empire, defeated France (when that was still a big deal), destroyed socialism in Central Europe...Try doing all that with out a mustache... Do I have to go on...

Who are you?
I am Mike Hermanovsky, I’m currently 19 years old living in Richmond Hill going to school in Waterwoo, Ontariooo.

Pedal bikes or motor bikes?
Been on both. Started with racing motocross and XC when I was younger, then switched over to DH. If I had unlimited cash I would race all of them again.
When did you start riding?
Started riding when I was a wee old lad of 3 years old. I’m not too sure if that’s when I was on my trikey or my bikey but I know I was cruisin around the block on some set of wheels.
Racing fun?
You bet! Theres nothing better than tearing up a course with a bunch of buds, and being able to compare our times. It’s definitely the best experience/ is a part of the biggest highlights of my life so far.
What do you look for in an awesome course?
I look for a course that can’t hold up under a lot of riders. I love to see courses fall apart, get super rutted and loose, it brings be back to my moto days. I also love gnarly braking bumps, huge floater jumps and big drops. Throw in a big booter at the bottom of the course and I’m in candyland.

How was the 09 season?
09 season was amazing! It was a huge learning experience for me. I started off the season racing in Senior Expert, won the first 2 races and came second in the 3rd. It helped me remember that I still had my lungs after a long winter. Then I upgraded to Senior Elite for the 4th race and got humbled for the rest of the season finishing top 10 once I think? It was such a cool thing to see the vibe of the fastest guys at the top of the hill, such an awesome feeling.
Does farting make you go faster?
I’m not too sure, I’ve always been way too scared to try it… Nobody likes to ride through the finish and straight to the can. But if we’re talking about basic physics laws then I guess it’s gotta make you go faster even a little bit… If you can find a way to light it as it comes out though it has to make you go wayyyy faster, no doubt about it.
What’s practice look like to you?
Practice is a little funny at the local trails because of the lack of elevation. But what I do is I start at the top of the hill, bomb down a run, then sprint my bike back up the hill and do another run. Depending on the course I’m training for I could end up doing it a bunch of times. Training for Camp Fortune I usually get 3 runs in a row nonstop on coroners, and what a sloppy third run it is… but hey whatever makes you faster right?
Some people have trouble doing extra practice or exercise, how do you do it?
Ride my bike all the time. I ride my road bike 14 km to work in the summer where I bike all day as a camp councilor, it’s a super sick opportunity. When I get home I usually try to get to the park where I do basic calisthenics (pushups, chin-ups etc.) and wind sprints. That’s a usual day for me… it helps feed my activity addiction and gets me training at the same time.

You have built some pretty gnar stuff, what goes through your mind when building jumps or lines?
I do a lot of visualization when I build things. You might notice that I don’t do a lot of practice run ins when I hit something for the first time. That’s usually because for the 3 or 4 hours I’m building I spend a lot of that time picturing myself in the flight path or what line I’d like to take. When I’m building I’m usually super excited to hit what I’m building and always spend lots of time making sure things line up right… If they don’t, who really cares? Better practice.
How long does it take you to cut up a log?
Really depends. I’ve sawed through a 6 inch log in about 15.6 seconds which is pretty schweet. I’m sure if I had a chainsaw I could do it in maybe 14, it would have to be a really good chainsaw though hahh
How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
I’ve gotten in this intricate discussion before with many other people and the argument has always tended to the answer of 3. However if you take into account that a wood chuck could only chuck wood if there is indeed wood to chuck, then the woodchuck would chuck as much wood as the woodchuck could. Henceforth Since the woodchuck would chuck as much wood as wood was present to chuck then the woodchuck would chuck 4… 4 final answer.
What does your dream trail look like to you?
I’ve always imagined this trail but I feel like it would be a bit surreal to put into practice. My riding preferences are all over the place so here’s a bunch of stuff I’d like to see. Super high speed open pedal downhill section (60-80 km/h) followed by the biggest floater gap/drop but buttery smooth. Cuts into a knee deep left hander rut and runs into a steep right hander hip followed by an open pedal forcing you to dodge between tight trees with a nice gnar rock garden in there somewhere. To cap off this trail id like to see a high speed kicker with an endless landing, and at the bottom of the hill there’s a super steep step up where you go maybe 25-30 feet vert .
What makes you build something yourself instead of driving somewhere else the majority of the time?
I really like the feeling of being the forest and using my creativity to build things that I have never seen before. That is ultimately the goal of building for me, to mix things up which makes for some great riding and awesome training. I prefer to build my own trails rather than riding other people’s stuff mainly because leaving my spot makes me feel like a bit of a trail poacher and that’s always sucks.

Your biggest inspiration?
I never really put much thought into who or what inspires me to race and ride. I feel like it’s hard to pick what inspires you in a sport that’s so fun because it’s almost as if the participation itself is inspiring enough. If I had to decide on what “inspires” me I would have to say that all the guys I race against inspire me. There is nothing more inspiring than getting beat by a handful of guys on one of my good runs. It makes me want to come out faster and stronger the next time.
What movie and TV show you think you would fit in best if you got to live in it?
Movie: Hot Rod (I would just be pulling mad stunts all the time)
TV show: Punk’d (I would want to replace Dax haha)
Excited for 2010?
You bet! Bike Sports DH team, doing more races, a new 2010 Demo 8 with the world’s fastest paintjob, red and black!
Any goals?
I’ve got a bunch. The biggest ones are finishing top 5 overall in DH (gonna be super tough) and finishing top 5 overall in senior sport XC (also going to take a big effort).
Fighting fish or hairless cat?
Fighting fish. I mean a fighting fish just sounds wicked. A hairless cat would just hiss and meow, not fun at all.

Any shout outs and thank yous?
Definitely gotta say thanks to my parents for supporting me with XC, DH and motocross all these years. They’ve been my “sponsors” for the past 4 DH race seasons and took care of basically all of my racing needs up to this point so a HUGE thanks goes out to them. I’d also like to thank all the people who gave me pointers or simply kept me company during different riding sessions. Finally, Bike Sports DH team for next year! No one can deny that head cam videos are freakin awesome! But when spending quite a bit of cash, some people have trouble deciding which camera would be best. From my perspective Go Pro is most likely the most popular in our MTB community. In fact they recently released a new 1080p version.

Heres a review of it: Go Pro HD review. There are some video samples in it too! You may also be able to score a little deal at the Spring Bike Show, if they have a booth next year like this year. Watching helmet cam videos are always bomb!
